5 Netflix Titles to Finish Out Summer

Every year around this time stores start stocking the back to school gear and the fall and Halloween decorations aren't too far behind. As someone who wishes it was always fall you'd be thinking these would all be welcome sights. And while they usually are, I have to put the breaks on because... come on. It's only August and we here in the north get such a short summer window. Let us have this time to truly enjoy the summer season!

5 Netflix Titles To Stream This Weekend

Oh yes, I am back with another installment of one of my all-time favorite posts to write, the 5 Netflix titles to stream this weekend. I've felt so inspired to write these lately because, well, it's terribly cold outside and I rather be curled up by the fire with my lovely tv and wifi.

5 Netflix Titles to Stream This Weekend

As busy as I am running a blog/business while holding down a full time job and raising teenagers with my husband, I always seem to find time to watch tv and movies! I think it has a lot to do with growing up in the 80's and 90's when film really hit it's stride. Whatever the reason, I am always on the look out for new titles to watch and I am more than happy to share what I am loving! Today, I give you the 5 Netflix titles to stream this weekend. Enjoy!

White Gold

"Set in a showroom in Essex in the mid-80s, charismatic salesman Vincent Swan leads his unscrupulous sales team. Smart, handsome and confident, Vincent will happily break the rules if it guarantees a sale."

With a name like White Gold I thought the show was going to be about 80's nose candy but they are actually salesman peddling new plastic windows. Hence, white gold. The show is fantastic, especially for fans of GG who would watch Chuck Bass read the phonebook. Chuck, I mean Ed Westwick, is fantabulous. There is no other word. The show is smart, retro and hilarious as Ed's character Vincent talks into the screen often. There are only six episodes in season 1 but fear not, season 2 is already in the works.

This Is Us

"Jack and his wife -- who is very pregnant with triplets -- have just moved into their new home in Pittsburgh. Successful and handsome television actor Kevin is growing increasingly bored with his bachelor lifestyle. Randall -- who was abandoned at a fire station by his father as an infant -- is a stylish New York-based businessman working to raise two daughters with his wife, Beth. These people are among a group, several of whom share a birthday, of seemingly random individuals whose lives intertwine in unexpected ways."

I am only a few episodes in but I am hooked. I've actually stopped watching, just waiting for AMH to catch up as I think this is not just some "girly" show but a great drama/comedy for everyone. Plus, parts of it take place in the 70's and my hubby is obsessed with all things 70's (which explains why we have a vintage 1970 Mercury Montego). The show is worthy of the hype, do yourself a favour and don't google anything before watching. The second season is on tv now and there were some spoilers floating around (thankfully I've dodged them all). Best to get caught up so that we know what everyone is talking about around the water cooler, or coffee line.

F is For Family

f is for family

"Set in the 1970s, this animated raunchy comedy is inspired by the life of stand-up comic Bill Burr, who is a co-creator and executive producer of the series. Burr also voices the character of Frank Murphy, a short-tempered veteran who lives in the suburbs with his wife, Sue (Laura Dern) and their three children. Frank, who works at an airport, has a penchant for shouting and profanity-filled rants. The series celebrates all things 1970s, including the lifestyle, the music, and all sorts of other nostalgic details."
If you love adult style animation (The Simpson's, American Dad, Family Guy) then you will love F is For Family. My husband and I (we've kept this one away from the kids) have watched both Season 1 and 2 so many times, we are actually quoting it to each other (which is a terribly geeky thing that we've done since we were teenagers). The family dynamic is hilarious and set in the 70's, during so much economic downturn, it's a little glimpse into how live was then. I love the mom character, who goes out into the workforce to make something of herself, a little old fashion girl power! The dad is voiced by comedian Bill Burr so you know it's funny and the supporting characters are just as hilarious! The next door neighbour Vic, their teenager son Kevin, even the star of the tv show, within the tv show, Colt Lugar with his catch phrase "Sometimes a man's gotta go, what a man does". So many laugh out loud moments in this sweet family, yet slightly raunchy, comedy. Don't judge me.

The Client List

netflix

"The series follows Riley Parks who begins work in a day spa in a local town after her husband abandons her and their children, leaving her in financial debt. She quickly realizes that the spa gives much more than massages, but works with the parlor's owner in order to keep food on the table. While helping to run the business, she struggles to discreetly balance two lives – a single mother who must provide for her family and a strong businesswoman working in a unique and frowned-upon business."

If you're a big Ghost Whisperer fan (which I am, remember this old post?) it might take you a minute to see Jennifer Love Hewitt as anything other than sweet loveable Melinda. JLH takes the character of Riley and really gets your sympathy right away. I mean, I went into this show being judgemental (I'll totally admit it) but by the end of season 2 even I was thinking, well, if you have to do it you might as well get paid! Lots of drama, friendship, family and romance. It's well acted by all and I'm sorry to say that they only got 2 seasons to tell the story (you can read all about why season 3 was a no-go here).

Friends From College

netflix shows

"Years after becoming friends at Harvard, Ethan, Lisa, Sam, Nick, Max and Marianne are heading into a new era -- their 40s. This series, directed and executive produced by Nicholas Stoller, delves into interwoven and complicated relationships, including former romantic entanglements and comedic explorations of old bonds. As everyone tries to manage their lives as adults, they also experience nostalgia."

If I could sum up this series in a word, it would be "messy". And isn't that what life is? Well, if your life resembles the shambles of these people, reach out and get help! Ha! There are only 8 episodes of the show, making it a quick watch on a rainy day with nothing else to do. I recommend watching while drinking hard liquor, some of the moments in this show just require a stiff drink! It's funny and cringeworthy and makes you appreciate how normal your friends from college really are.

And now for some sad news out of Netflix. Disney is removing all of their titles with the provider to start their own streaming service. It's not happening until the end of 2019 so you still have lots of time to re-watch Tangled and Star Wars!

Oh! And have I mentioned how much I love Stranger Things? Oh, I have? Well, that's because it is a totally tubular 80's throwback highly influenced by some of the greatest movies of our generation! The second season is back on October 27th and yes, everyone at work already knows not to expect much out of me as I'll be watching at 12:01am when it's released.

Do you have any Netflix recommendations for me?

5 Shows To Watch Right Now

I'll admit I am a big consumer of movies and television shows. I grew up in the best generation of tv - we had One Saturday Morning to look forward to every weekend, TGIF sitcom nights, and on Wednesdays all my friends piled into my mom's living room to watch Dawson's Creek. Things haven't changed much (I do still love cartoons!) and the family and I just finished watching a few new titles. The majority are on Netflix so they should be easy the find the next time you are looking for something new to watch.

Netflix Binge

It's officially cold & flu season and I spent a good portion of my work holidays ill. Luckily, I didn't have any plans so I spent my time with my good friend, Netflix. Grab your hot tea, warm blankets and medicine and prepare to get lost in a Netflix binge.

A few of my favorites

The Mindy Project

I have professed my love of Mindy on my Instagram and Twitter pages before. Her show is sexy and clever, yet goofy and heartwarming. Plus, the Christmas episodes look like Kate Spade decorated them, the scene is total eye candy. Oh and her clothes and her one liners, amazing!

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

One of the most inappropriate shows I have ever watched and I have watched each episode so many times I can quote it to you. A group of narcissistic friends who grew up together handle lifes adventures by cursing their way through it. I have a feeling you either love or hate the characters. Danny Devito joined in the second season and they are now the longest running live action comedy show on tv.

Parks & Recreation

Don't you just wish work was this fun! Leslie (Amy Poehler) is a type A workaholic but loves her team and would do anything for them or JJ's waffles. So many great characters within the show, they could have each done a spin off. I'd love to watch a show that centered on just Ron Swanson.

Ghost Whisperer

Each episode is another story of someone needing assistance from Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) to move to the "other side". I find the first half of each episode very scary and the second half is all very uplifting and lovely. If you're running a fever, you will probably cry a lot at this show. Plus the house Melinda and her husband are renovating is adorable and her clothes are fantastic. I always watch on tv and have my iPad open to Pinterest to pin her outfits.

SVU

SVU is now in it's 17th season and still going strong! You would think they would run out of cases but they never do and some of the stories "ripped from the headlines" are always interesting to watch. Some episodes are emotionally draining and others leave you with a "justice has been served" feeling of satisfaction.

Portlandia

One of the strangest, yet funniest, shows I have ever watched. Lot's of sketch comedy, think vignettes that tie into one another, with recurring characters through episodes. Watch from the very first episode and you will be singing "The dream of the 90's is alive in Portland" all day.

Bates Motel

I just finished the first two seasons of Bates Motel and every episode has you slightly creeped out but also feeling bad for Norman, and sometimes even Norma. Norman Bates, who we all know from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, moves into a motel with his mother following the passing of his father. He's a teenager and we follow him through school and managing typical teenager things. I was surprised to see it set in todays time but it totally works. I really like the brother Dylan, he's a very complex character.

Believe it or not there are still titles on Netflix that I was not able to watch while I was off. I keep hearing such good things about  the below titles, I am saving them for the next rainy or sick day. They are: Scandal, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Salem, Ally McBeal and Fixer Upper Chip & Joanna.

Fingers crossed that y'all, myself included, do not get hit with another cold this season. At the very least we will have Netflix to keep us entertained!

*There are subtle differences between US & Canadian Netflix, not all titles will apply to your region.
